Equity Bank Uganda Names Henry Rugamba New Board Chairman

Equity Bank Uganda Limited has appointed Henry Rugamba as the new Chairman of its Board of Directors, marking a new chapter in the bank’s governance and strategic direction.

Rugamba officially assumed the role on June 15, 2026, taking over from Mark Ocitti, who retired after serving as both a Director and Chairman of the Board. The bank said the transition reflects its continued focus on strengthening leadership and supporting its long-term growth strategy.

With more than three decades of experience in communications, public relations, corporate affairs and strategic advisory, Rugamba brings extensive expertise in stakeholder relations, reputation management and crisis communication.

He holds a degree in Politics and International Law from Makerere University and has built a career advising organisations across the public and private sectors on corporate strategy and engagement.

Rugamba currently chairs the boards of BAT Uganda and Harris International Uganda, while also serving in leadership roles within community and humanitarian organisations.

Beyond business, he is involved with ANECCA Medical Charity, which supports HIV/AIDS interventions in Karamoja, and participates in community initiatives through the Rotary Club of Kampala.

Equity Bank Uganda said Rugamba’s governance experience, strategic perspective and leadership skills will be valuable as the bank continues to expand its services and strengthen its position in Uganda’s financial sector.

The bank also recognised Ocitti for his contribution during his tenure, highlighting his role in supporting institutional growth, market development and value creation for shareholders.

Equity Group Holdings Plc Chairman Prof. Isaac Macharia welcomed Rugamba’s appointment, saying his experience would support the bank’s next phase of growth while appreciating Ocitti’s years of service and commitment to the institution.
