Launched last year, the Go-Green campaign aims to plant 2,400 trees across selected schools in Uganda while also providing financial literacy sessions for students during each tree-planting activity. So far, St. Mark’s College Namagoma planted (60 trees), City High School (100 trees), Mother Kevin Primary School (400 trees), while Padre Pio Primary School and Exodus College in Wakiso District (1,005 trees). Peace High School planted 300 trees and Kitukutwe C/U Primary School (500 trees) bringing a total number of 2,365 trees.
ICEA LION Uganda continued on the journey and planted 500 fruit and shade trees at Kitukutwe C/U Primary School as part of its ongoing Go-Green campaign, which promotes environmental conservation and encourages young people to take action to protect the environment and plan for a better future. The activity brought together students, teachers and ICEA LION staff.
Speaking during the tree-planting activity, Kevin Aloysious Ssekitto, Agency Unit Leader at ICEA LION, said the company’s work in communities goes beyond its insurance business.
“Our presence here is not simply about selling insurance. We are here to play the role of a good neighbor. And what does a good neighbour do? A good neighbour takes care of the environment,” he said.
Ssekitto explained that planting trees is also a way of planning for the future because trees planted today can benefit future generations.
“The trees we are planting today give us assurance for the future. For example, this mango tree is being planted today, but in 10 years or sometime in the future, it could support the next generation. It could benefit your siblings, your children and other members of the community,” he said.
The tree-planting activity at Kitukutwe C/U Primary School is part of ICEA LION’s nationwide target of planting 500,000 trees across Uganda.
The campaign aims to help communities understand that environmental protection is everyone’s responsibility. It also encourages young people to take part in activities that can create a cleaner and healthier environment
The campaign has already reached several schools across Uganda, including St. Mark’s College Namagoma, City High School, Mother Kevin Primary School, Padre Pio Primary School, Exodus College and Peace High School in Matugga.
According to ICEA LION, involving schools is important because students can take the lessons they learn back home and share them with their families and communities.
“At ICEA LION, we believe in planning for the future, and this activity brings that commitment to life,” Ssekitto said. “We are doing this together with the students, teachers and members of the community so that we can help protect our environment and create a better future.”
The activity also included a post-planting challenge, encouraging students and other participants to take responsibility for caring for the trees after planting.
The challenge is aimed at ensuring that the seedlings are watered, protected and cared for until they grow into mature trees.
For the students of Kitukutwe C/U Primary School, the activity provided an opportunity to learn about environmental conservation through practical action.
By planting fruit and shade trees, the school will not only contribute to environmental protection but could also enjoy the benefits of the trees in the future.
The initiative highlights ICEA LION’s focus on combining environmental action, financial education and community involvement to support a more sustainable future for young people and their communities.
