Sylvia Mulinge Chief Executive Officer MTN
MTN Uganda is driving towards its ambitious 2025 vision with the mantra “Unstoppable,” under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer Sylvia Mulinge. During a recent media engagement on January 28, Mulinge outlined how the company is leveraging technology, innovation, and financial services to transform lives and empower communities.
Mulinge emphasized that MTN Uganda’s success is tied to the well-being of the communities it serves. She noted that beyond providing connectivity, MTN is enabling digital transformation in healthcare, education, and government services. The company is also expanding its fintech solutions to enhance financial inclusion, particularly through mobile money services.
“Our goal is to be the subconscious choice for every Ugandan,” Mulinge said. “We want people to associate MTN not just with connectivity but with meaningful impact. Whether through education, healthcare, or entrepreneurship, we are driving positive outcomes across sectors.”
With Uganda’s youthful population—73% under the age of 30—MTN is focused on digitalization as a key driver of growth. The company has deployed 550 5G sites, primarily in Kampala, and continues to expand fiber connectivity to homes and businesses. Despite smartphone penetration remaining below 50%, voice services still hold significant value for many users, particularly those relying on feature phones.
Mulinge highlighted that MTN is also investing in entrepreneurs developing innovations around mobile money services, reinforcing its commitment to financial inclusion.
On Uganda’s macroeconomic stability, Mulinge stressed the importance of a favorable investment climate. “Investor confidence is tied to policy stability, inflation control, and ease of doing business,” she said. “With inflation below 5% and clear regulatory policies, Uganda remains an attractive investment destination.”
She also noted the importance of stable monetary policies that encourage long-term investment, ensuring sustained growth in the telecom sector and beyond.
MTN Uganda is also embracing artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance customer experiences and operational efficiency. Mulinge acknowledged AI’s potential in streamlining customer interactions, improving service delivery, and driving digital transformation. However, she highlighted challenges such as data privacy, ethics, and regulatory concerns, which must be addressed as AI adoption grows.
Looking ahead, as MTN Uganda accelerates towards its 2025 ambition, Mulinge reaffirmed the company’s commitment to digital inclusion, financial services expansion, infrastructure development, and community empowerment. “With an unwavering focus on innovation and transformation, our journey towards 2025 is truly unstoppable,” she said.
