PRAU taps technology to streamline membership management

The Public Relations Association of Uganda (PRAU) has introduced digital membership identification cards, signalling a shift towards more technology-driven engagement with its members.

The new system was unveiled during the association’s 50th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at Hotel Africana, where members and industry stakeholders gathered to reflect on PRAU’s journey and future direction.

The digital membership cards will allow practitioners to access their credentials electronically, verify their professional status, and participate in association activities through a secure platform. The move eliminates the need for physical cards and aligns PRAU with global trends where professional bodies are increasingly adopting digital solutions to better serve their members.

Speaking during the AGM, PRAU President Irene Nakasiita thanked members for their continued support, noting that their commitment has enabled the association to grow and remain relevant over the years.

She said the introduction of digital IDs reflects PRAU’s focus on innovation and its readiness to adapt to the evolving communications landscape. Nakasiita explained that as the industry becomes more digital, the association must embrace new tools that simplify processes and enhance service delivery to members.

The AGM also served as an opportunity to assess PRAU’s performance over the past year. Key achievements highlighted included professional development programmes, strategic partnerships within the communications industry, and advocacy efforts aimed at strengthening standards in public relations practice across Uganda.

Members used the platform to discuss ways of further positioning PRAU as a leading professional body, with emphasis on expanding its influence and supporting practitioners in a rapidly changing media environment.

Looking ahead, the Governing Council outlined several priorities for the coming year. These include commemorating PRAU’s 50-year milestone, growing membership, increasing training opportunities, and investing more in digital tools to improve engagement.

Officials said the adoption of digital membership IDs is part of a broader plan to modernise the association’s operations while ensuring inclusivity. During a demonstration at the AGM, members were taken through how the system works, with features designed to accommodate different user needs and preferences.

The new development was positively received by members, many of whom welcomed the convenience and efficiency associated with digital access. The platform is expected to make it easier for members to interact with the association and participate in its programmes regardless of location.

As PRAU celebrates five decades of existence, leaders say the association remains focused on promoting ethical practice, professional growth, and collaboration within the public relations field. They noted that embracing innovation will be critical in sustaining relevance and meeting the expectations of modern communication professionals.

The 50th AGM not only marked a historic milestone for PRAU but also underscored its commitment to building a dynamic and forward-looking PR industry. With the rollout of digital membership IDs, the association is positioning itself to better respond to the needs of its members while shaping the future of public relations in Uganda.
