The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has made a remarkable turnaround in its revenue collection. Just two months ago, the authority was lagging behind its half-year target by 39%, according to Ministry of Finance estimates. However, in a surprising twist, the URA managed to close the half-year revenue collection period with a surplus of Shs 322 billion, as confirmed by Commissioner General John Musinguzi Rujoki.

This achievement is a testament to the URA’s efforts to improve revenue collection. The authority’s performance in the first two months of the financial year (July to August 2024) showed a surplus of UGX 168.31 billion, with a net revenue collection of UGX 4,582.40 billion against a target of UGX 4,414.09 billion.

The URA’s success can be attributed to various factors, including the commitment of taxpayers to meeting their tax obligations and the ongoing reforms in tax administration aimed at streamlining processes and improving revenue collection. Additionally, the authority’s efforts to widen the tax base and influence compliance have also contributed to its success.

As the URA continues to work towards its annual target of UGX 32 trillion, it is clear that the authority is on the right track. With its strong performance in the first half of the year, the URA is confident that it will surpass its target and contribute significantly to the government’s revenue.
