ICPAU Registers 275 Licensed Accounting Firms as Profession Expands

The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda has released its 2026 register of licensed accounting firms and practising accountants authorised to offer professional services in Uganda, reflecting steady growth in the profession.

The newly published register lists 275 licensed firms, representing a four percent increase from 2025. The rise signals continued expansion in Uganda’s accountancy sector amid growing demand for professional financial services.

In a statement, the Institute reiterated that under the Accountants Act Cap. 294, it is unlawful for any individual or firm to provide accountancy services without a valid Certificate of Practice or firm licence.

The regulated services include financial reporting, audit and assurance, tax advisory, financial and cash flow management, risk management, transaction services, restructuring and insolvency, as well as general business advisory.

ICPAU Director of Standards and Regulation, Charles Lutimba, cautioned the public against engaging unlicensed practitioners, particularly those offering audit services at unusually low cost.

While such services may appear affordable, Lutimba warned that they often compromise quality and credibility.

“Audit services from unlicensed individuals may seem cheaper, but in the long run they are detrimental to businesses. Such financial records are not only illegitimate but also lack verifiable audit quality,” he said.

The Institute maintains a stringent licensing framework that evaluates firms on professional competence, compliance with standards, financial integrity, and the character of practitioners. Licensed firms are also subjected to periodic quality reviews to ensure adherence to international auditing standards.

ICPAU urged businesses and the public to verify the status of accounting service providers before engagement.
