Equity Bank Uganda has committed Shs10 million towards the third edition of the 2026 Watoto Golf Tournament, reinforcing its support for women’s economic empowerment through entrepreneurship.
The sponsorship was unveiled on Wednesday during the tournament partners’ press briefing at the Uganda Golf Club in Kampala ahead of the fundraising event scheduled for Saturday.
This year’s tournament, held under the theme “Hope on the Green,” seeks to raise Shs450 million to provide business starter kits to 1,000 vulnerable women. Each beneficiary will receive a package valued at Shs450,000 to establish a small business and earn a sustainable livelihood.
Equity Bank Uganda Managing Director Gift Shoko said the partnership reflects the bank’s commitment to expanding economic opportunities for women, youth and small entrepreneurs.
“The Watoto Golf Tournament is a cause that closely aligns with our mission of empowering women and youth entrepreneurs. We believe every swing on the golf course will translate into opportunities that uplift families, restore dignity and strengthen communities. Equity Bank will continue supporting initiatives that create lasting social and economic transformation,” Shoko said.
He noted that the sponsorship goes beyond supporting a sporting event, describing it as an investment in sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable households.
The initiative also complements the bank’s flagship EquiMama programme, which provides women entrepreneurs with affordable credit, financial literacy training, business mentorship, networking opportunities and tailored financial solutions.
Since its launch in 2021, EquiMama has trained more than 89,000 women in business and financial management while extending loans to over 40,000 women entrepreneurs. The programme also offers unsecured financing of between Shs100,000 and Shs5 million, alongside insurance benefits covering maternity, life, disability, fire and other unforeseen risks.
Watoto Church Lead Pastor Julius Rwotlonyo welcomed the bank’s continued support, saying partnerships between the private sector and faith-based organisations are helping vulnerable families rebuild their lives through economic empowerment.
“Our vision is to restore dignity by equipping vulnerable women with practical opportunities to earn an income and care for their families. Partners like Equity Bank are helping turn that vision into reality by investing in hope and self-reliance,” he said.
The tournament, which began earlier this week with a caddies’ competition, also features activities aimed at introducing new players to golf as organisers seek to make the sport more inclusive.
Beyond the competition, organisers say the annual event has evolved into a fundraising platform that mobilises businesses, golfers and development partners to support women-led enterprises, strengthen household incomes and contribute to community development.
