NCBA Bank Uganda, in partnership with legal firm Dentons and the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), has intensified efforts to promote environmental sustainability through a tree-planting exercise at Nakasero Primary School in Kampala.
The initiative, held as part of activities to mark World Environment Day, brought together bank staff, pupils, teachers and local leaders in a campaign aimed at fostering environmental awareness and encouraging community participation in climate action.
Speaking during the exercise, NCBA Bank Uganda Head of Strategy and Sustainability, Martin Mwanje, said the activity reflects the bank’s commitment to environmental conservation under its long-term sustainability agenda.
Mwanje noted that through the bank’s Change the Story Sustainability Strategy, NCBA is prioritising environmental stewardship, community development and employee-driven impact initiatives.
“Our sustainability agenda seeks to create lasting positive change in the communities where we operate. Through strategic partnerships, we are working towards planting 100,000 trees by 2030 while empowering our staff and communities to take an active role in environmental protection,” he said.
As part of this year’s World Environment Day activities, NCBA plans to plant at least 500 trees and support the development of a grass-covered recreational field at the school to provide pupils with a conducive environment for outdoor activities.
School administrators welcomed the initiative, saying it will not only improve the school environment but also help instill a culture of environmental responsibility among learners.
World Environment Day is celebrated annually on June 5 as the United Nations’ leading platform for environmental advocacy and action. The 2026 celebrations were held under the theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” which calls for accelerated efforts to address climate change and protect natural ecosystems.
Globally, the celebrations were hosted in Baku, Azerbaijan, while Adjumani District hosted Uganda’s national commemorations. The day provided an opportunity for governments, businesses, communities and individuals to renew commitments towards environmental conservation and sustainable development.
