Airtel Turns Mobile Network into Road Safety Platform Amid Rising Crash Toll

Soumendra Sahu, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Airtel Uganda

Airtel Uganda has rolled out a nationwide road safety campaign that will use its mobile network to deliver life-saving reminders to millions of subscribers, as the country continues to battle a growing number of fatal road crashes.

The telecommunications company said road safety messages will be sent through SMS, as well as selected end-of-call and transaction notifications, ensuring customers receive regular reminders about responsible road use during their daily interactions with the network.

The initiative comes at a time when Uganda is witnessing an increase in road accidents. The Uganda Police Force’s Annual Crime Report 2025 shows that 26,044 road traffic crashes were recorded last year, compared to 25,107 in 2024, representing a 3.7 percent rise. Of these, 4,602 were fatal, 13,563 were classified as serious and 7,879 were minor. Police attributed many of the crashes to dangerous driving practices such as speeding, reckless overtaking and other forms of negligence.

Beyond the digital messages, Airtel Uganda’s senior leadership has joined the campaign through a series of awareness videos encouraging all road users to adopt safer habits.

“Every journey ends somewhere important: at home, at work, at school or with the people waiting for us. Through the platforms available to us, we want to remind Ugandans that the choices we make on the road matter. Slowing down, avoiding distractions, wearing a seat belt or helmet, respecting other road users and following traffic rules can help protect lives,” said Soumendra Sahu, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Airtel Uganda.

The campaign urges motorists to obey speed limits, avoid using mobile phones while driving, never drive under the influence of alcohol, wear seat belts and ensure their vehicles are mechanically fit before setting off. Motorcycle riders and passengers are encouraged to wear helmets, while pedestrians are advised to remain vigilant and use designated crossing points where available.

According to Airtel Uganda, embedding the safety messages into its communication channels allows the company to reach millions of subscribers without disrupting their normal use of mobile services, making road safety awareness part of everyday communication.

The company said the campaign is part of its broader commitment to using digital technology and its nationwide network to support public education on issues that affect communities.

Airtel Uganda also conveyed its sympathies to families who have lost loved ones in road crashes and wished those injured a quick recovery.
