MTN Mobile Money Uganda has partnered with Next Travel to introduce Travel by MoMo, a digital flight booking platform that allows customers to search, compare and pay for airline tickets using their MTN MoMo wallets.
Launched in Kampala on July 21, the platform is expected to simplify air travel by enabling customers to book flights directly from their mobile phones, eliminating the need for multiple payment channels and making travel services more accessible to a wider population.
The service gives travellers access to a broad selection of domestic, regional and international flights, with fares displayed in Uganda shillings. Customers can complete their bookings using MTN MoMo, offering a convenient payment option for people who may not have access to traditional banking services or credit cards.
Speaking at the launch, MTN MoMo Uganda Managing Director Phase Lubega said the innovation reflects the company’s focus on developing digital solutions that address everyday customer needs.
“Many Ugandans still encounter challenges when booking flights, including navigating different booking platforms and accessing convenient payment methods. Through our partnership with Next Travel, we are removing those barriers by providing a simple platform that customers already know and trust,” Lubega said.
He added that the initiative is part of MTN MoMo’s broader strategy of expanding beyond digital payments to offer services that improve customers’ daily lives.
MTN MoMo Uganda Chief Product Officer Jemima Kariuki said the platform will make travel more inclusive by enabling more Ugandans to book flights using mobile money.
“We believe travel should be within reach for everyone. By integrating flight bookings with MTN MoMo, we are opening up travel opportunities to customers who actively use mobile money but may not have access to credit cards or other conventional payment options,” she said.
The platform is powered by Next Travel, a Ugandan travel management company, which will provide local travel expertise and customer support throughout the booking process.
Next Travel Managing Director Jonathan Martin Kyeyo said the partnership combines the company’s travel experience with MTN MoMo’s digital ecosystem to deliver a seamless booking experience.
“Our goal is to give customers greater convenience, choice and confidence when planning their journeys. Travel by MoMo enables Ugandans to compare flight options and complete bookings easily through a solution designed with the local market in mind,” Kyeyo said.
The platform also leverages technology from Amadeus, one of the world’s leading travel technology providers, giving customers access to real-time global flight inventory and allowing them to compare travel options from airlines across more than 190 countries.
Customers can access the service through the MTN MoMo app, where they can search for flights, compare fares and complete bookings in a few simple steps.
The introduction of Travel by MoMo marks another step in MTN MoMo’s expansion into digital lifestyle services as the company continues to diversify beyond mobile money transactions and strengthen Uganda’s digital economy through innovative partnerships.
