Britam Uganda and Airtel Money Uganda have launched a strategic partnership aimed at making insurance more accessible and affordable through mobile technology, in a move expected to deepen insurance penetration and strengthen financial inclusion across the country.

The partnership, unveiled on Thursday, July 22, 2026, at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Kampala, will be delivered under the Insurance Ku Ssimu campaign, an initiative designed to eliminate barriers such as distance, paperwork and limited service hours while maintaining customer protection and regulatory standards.

By combining Britam’s expertise in insurance and asset management with Airtel Money’s nationwide digital platform and extensive agent network, the two companies say they will offer simple, convenient and customer-focused insurance solutions to millions of Ugandans.

The first product under the partnership is Motor Third Party Insurance, enabling Airtel Money customers to purchase insurance by dialling *185*761#, entering their vehicle details, making secure payment using their Airtel Money PIN and receiving confirmation via SMS together with access to a digital insurance sticker.

Speaking at the launch, Airtel Mobile Commerce Uganda Managing Director Japhet Alitho said the collaboration represents far more than the introduction of another financial product.

“At Airtel Money and Britam, we are not simply launching another product. We are investing in the confidence, resilience and aspirations of millions of Ugandans,” Alitho said.

He noted that the partnership is built on shared values of trust, innovation and a commitment to enabling progress, adding that it marks the beginning of a broader journey to provide simple, affordable financial protection solutions while advancing Uganda’s financial inclusion agenda.

Britam’s Chief Executive Officer for General Insurance, Allan Mafabi, described the partnership as a step towards protecting livelihoods by making insurance services easier to access through digital channels.

“This partnership is about far more than transactions; it is about protecting livelihoods and building resilience,” Mafabi said.

He noted that insurance gives individuals and businesses the confidence to recover from unexpected losses, particularly farmers whose livelihoods are increasingly threatened by unpredictable weather and other risks.

“Our farmers are constantly exposed to risks beyond their control, from unpredictable weather to unforeseen losses. Financial protection gives them the confidence to recover, rebuild and keep moving forward,” he said.

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), Dr. Protazio Sande, welcomed the initiative, describing it as an important milestone in closing Uganda’s insurance protection gap and improving financial resilience.

He said the regulator remains committed to supporting innovative partnerships that make insurance products more accessible and affordable because the ultimate goal is to protect more Ugandans.

Dr. Sande, however, urged the partners to uphold transparency, openness and consistent communication to sustain public confidence.

“Like any successful marriage, this partnership requires full disclosure and trust. The people who depend on this relationship must be fully protected, and that trust must be sustained not only between the partners but also with the millions of Ugandans who place their confidence in you,” he said.

The launch also featured a panel discussion involving regulators, industry leaders and financial sector players, who explored how mobile-first partnerships can close Uganda’s protection and investment gap by transforming financial access into meaningful resilience for millions of people.

Britam’s General Manager for Business Development, Richard Mwebesa, said the partnership reflects both companies’ commitment to customer-first innovation and sustainable growth.

He said leveraging Airtel Money’s extensive digital ecosystem alongside Britam’s insurance expertise would enable the delivery of affordable, convenient and tailored insurance solutions directly to customers’ mobile phones.

The partnership reflects the growing integration of insurance and digital financial services in Uganda, with industry players increasingly leveraging mobile technology to extend financial protection to underserved communities and accelerate the country’s financial inclusion agenda.
