UCU Honours Archbishop Emeritus Henry Orombi with Road Named in His Legacy

Uganda Christian University (UCU) has honoured former Archbishop of the Church of Uganda and former Chancellor, Archbishop Emeritus Henry Luke Orombi, by naming a major road at its Main Campus in Mukono after him in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the institution, the Church, and the nation.

The newly unveiled Henry Orombi Road, which stretches from Bishop Tucker Gate to the Main Gate, was officially launched by the retired Archbishop during a ceremony held at the university on Sunday. The road forms part of UCU’s ongoing seven-year Campus Transformation Initiative aimed at modernising and expanding the university’s infrastructure.

The event began with a worship service at ThornyCroft Chapel–Kyaggwe Congregation in Nkoyoyo Hall, where Archbishop Orombi delivered a sermon before leading a campus tour that culminated in the unveiling and ribbon-cutting ceremony of the road bearing his name.

Speaking at the ceremony, Archbishop Orombi reflected on the university’s remarkable growth from its origins as Bishop Tucker Theological College to one of the country’s leading institutions of higher learning.

“UCU built me up,” he said. “I sing the praise of UCU wherever I go because I believe what they put in students here is special.”

The former Archbishop also shared lessons on leadership and legacy, emphasizing the importance of finishing one’s service with integrity.

“Let your departure be good so that you can always come back; if you don’t finish well, it’s hard to come back,” he remarked.

The day’s activities included a tree-planting exercise, a visit to the ThornyCroft Chapel Sanctuary Grounds, a gift presentation, and a luncheon hosted by the university management and attended by members of the UCU community. The function was presided over by Vice Chancellor Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi.

In a citation read in his honour, UCU praised Archbishop Orombi for his transformative leadership both as Archbishop of the Church of Uganda from 2004 to 2012 and later as Chancellor of the university.

The citation described him as a visionary church leader whose tenure was marked by the expansion of church infrastructure, promotion of reconciliation, strengthening of Uganda’s role within the global Anglican Communion, and steadfast commitment to biblical teaching and gospel-centred ministry.

As Chancellor, Orombi was credited with championing academic excellence, spiritual formation, and character development, while overseeing the expansion of academic programmes, research, and university infrastructure.

“His leadership continually reminded the university that education is not merely the pursuit of knowledge but the formation of character and service to God and society,” the citation noted.

University officials said naming the road after Archbishop Orombi was a fitting tribute to his enduring service and immense contribution to the growth of both the Church of Uganda and Uganda Christian University.

“It is our honour to join his family and the wider UCU community in unveiling the Henry Orombi Road,” Prof. Mushengyezi said.

The road now stands as a lasting symbol of Archbishop Orombi’s legacy of servant leadership, faith, and commitment to nurturing future generations through Christian higher education.
