KAMPALA – Airtel Uganda has partnered with SPIRO, an electric mobility company, to introduce electric motorcycles into its distribution network in a move aimed at improving last-mile delivery while promoting clean transport across the country.
The initiative will enable Airtel Franchise Partners to use electric motorcycles to distribute SIM cards, Airtel Money float and other telecom products and services more efficiently, while cutting fuel costs and reducing carbon emissions.
The programme began with the handover of the first 268 SPIRO electric motorcycles, part of more than 1,000 units ordered by Airtel Uganda. The rollout will be carried out in phases until all interested franchise partners across the country are covered.
To make ownership easier, Airtel has introduced an interest-free financing arrangement that allows franchise partners to acquire the motorcycles and repay the cost over 24 months through monthly commission deductions.
Speaking at the launch, Japhet Aritho, Managing Director of Airtel Mobile Commerce Uganda Limited, said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to supporting its business partners while embracing environmentally friendly solutions.

“As our business grows, we want to ensure our products and services reach customers faster and more efficiently. By giving our franchise partners access to electric motorcycles, we are helping them lower operating costs, improve their businesses and contribute to protecting the environment,” Aritho said.
Franchise partners are a key part of Airtel’s distribution network, delivering telecom products and services to customers in different parts of the country. The new electric motorcycles come with GPS tracking, after-sales support and access to SPIRO’s battery-swapping stations, reducing downtime and improving daily operations.
SPIRO Uganda Country Director Brenden Kachenje said the partnership highlights the growing role of electric mobility in helping businesses achieve their sustainability goals.
“We are pleased to work with Airtel Uganda in expanding the use of electric motorcycles. This partnership supports our goal of promoting clean transport, and we plan to deploy 50,000 electric motorcycles across Uganda by December 2026,” Kachenje said.
The partnership is expected to improve the efficiency of Airtel’s distribution network while reducing dependence on fuel-powered motorcycles. Company officials say the shift to electric mobility will lower operating costs for franchise partners and help reduce emissions, supporting Airtel Uganda’s long-term sustainability agenda.
