Government Sets August Deadline to Clear Digital Number Plate Backlog

The Ministry of Works and Transport has directed the contractor implementing Uganda’s Digital Number Plate Programme to clear the backlog in the production and issuance of digital number plates by the end of August, as the government seeks to improve service delivery for motorists.

The directive follows growing concerns over delays that have left many vehicle owners waiting for their digital number plates.

Officials said the contractor has committed to increasing production to ensure the current backlog is cleared within the agreed timeline. Going forward, the company will maintain a monthly reserve of about 3,000 number plates to prevent future shortages and ensure a steady supply.

The ministry said the additional stock will help reduce waiting times and enable quicker processing of new vehicle registrations and replacement requests.

Government also warned against the use of unofficial agents and brokers, saying some individuals continue to exploit motorists by claiming they can fast-track the registration process. Officials stressed that all applications for digital number plates should be made through the official registration channels.

Motorists who need replacement number plates due to loss, theft or damage have also been urged to follow the approved application procedures to avoid fraud and unnecessary delays.

Uganda introduced the Digital Number Plate Programme under the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System, a national initiative aimed at improving road safety, strengthening vehicle identification and enhancing security through better monitoring of vehicles on the country’s roads.

The ministry expressed confidence that once the backlog is cleared, the programme will operate more efficiently and provide motorists with faster and more reliable services while supporting the country’s broader security objectives.
