Museveni Bids Farewell to Outgoing German Ambassador

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has praised the longstanding relationship between Uganda and Germany as he bid farewell to outgoing German Ambassador Matthias Schauer, who is concluding his diplomatic assignment after nearly six years in the country.

During a farewell meeting at State House Entebbe, Museveni commended Schauer for his contribution to strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries and wished him success in his future engagements. The ambassador was accompanied by his wife, Katharina Schauer.

The meeting offered an opportunity for the two leaders to reflect on Uganda-Germany relations, which have over the years expanded in areas such as trade, development cooperation, health, education and investment.

Museveni also reiterated the importance of national sovereignty, emphasizing that countries should be allowed to determine their own political and development paths without undue external influence. He noted that sustainable progress is best achieved when nations are given space to address their challenges independently.

In his remarks, Schauer expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in Uganda, describing the country as welcoming and its people as one of its greatest strengths. He said his diplomatic posting had left him with lasting memories and valuable experiences that he and his family would cherish.

The envoy also highlighted Uganda’s efforts in the health sector, particularly its response to public health emergencies, and commended the resilience and hospitality he witnessed during his stay.

Schauer, who assumed office in July 2020, is expected to retire after completing his assignment in Uganda, bringing to a close a diplomatic tenure marked by continued engagement between Kampala and Berlin.

His wife, Katharina, thanked Ugandans for the warmth extended to their family throughout their stay, saying Uganda would always remain close to their hearts.

The farewell meeting underscored the enduring partnership between Uganda and Germany and the shared commitment to deepening cooperation in areas that support social and economic development.
