The Church of Uganda has announced that this year’s Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations at Namugongo will be held scientifically and under strict observance of Ministry of Health Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
The announcement follows a visit by the Archbishop of Church of Uganda, The Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, to the Uganda Martyrs’ Anglican Site in Namugongo to assess preparations for the annual celebrations.
Uganda Christian University (UCU), which was appointed by the House of Bishops to organise the celebrations on behalf of the Church of Uganda, has undertaken major improvements at the site ahead of the event.
The renovations and developments have focused on security, sanitation, beautification, water supply, and the overall welfare of pilgrims expected at Namugongo.
Among the key developments are the construction and renovation of modern toilet facilities, establishment of walkways, restoration of the green environment, reconstruction of sections of the perimeter wall, renovation of buildings at the site, and a general clean-up exercise.
The university has also drilled and installed a solar-powered water supply system to improve access to clean water during the celebrations.
However, Church leaders said the celebrations will be conducted in line with public health guidelines due to the current health situation.
According to the Church of Uganda, attendance at the main Martyrs’ Day service at Namugongo will strictly be by invitation, with the number of participants limited in accordance with Ministry of Health guidelines.
At the same time, all dioceses across the province have been encouraged to commemorate Martyrs’ Day from their respective parishes to allow Christians participate while observing health measures.
The Church also announced that the official Martyrs’ Day liturgy will later be shared through diocesan secretaries.
Archbishop Kaziimba further directed Uganda Christian University to continue coordinating this year’s scientific celebrations while also preparing to organise next year’s Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations.
The next cluster of organisers is expected to be announced during next year’s event.
Church of Uganda has urged Christians and the general public to continue observing Ministry of Health SOPs to ensure the safety and well-being of all worshippers during the celebrations.
